Today’s Punch Classic

The World of Pont

Graham Laidler, known as Pont, is one of Lord Drone’s favourite cartoonists.

Pont drew hundreds of cartoons for Punch magazine in the 1930s and was a keen observer of the upper middle classes. He is perhaps most famous for his series on the ‘British Character’. This was published as a book in 1938.

Laidler signed his name as Pont, short for Pontifex Maximus, (Latin for greatest priest), a nickname he acquired during a visit to Rome. He died of polio in 1940 aged 32.
