DRONE TV EXCLUSIVE
Fifty years on, a big bundle of memories of the Evening News
INSPIRED by the Drone’s front page feature about the 45th anniversary of the demise of the London Evening News, STEVE MILL has unearthed some fascinating video footage of the paper 50 years ago.
The clips are from a television show of the mid 70's called Going a Bundle. He has extracted a small portion of an edition about how newspapers are, (or were) put together. The programme was fronted by the highly unlikely pairing of actor Harry Fowler, (himself a former newspaper seller) and hoity toity actor James Villiers.
Steve writes: “There was a fair bit of jiggery pokery to get the video from an old dvd recorder hard disk.I have no idea of any of those News writers are still around but it might be fun for those from that era to see the original office setup.”
The London Evening News opened in 1881 and closed on October 31, 1980, merging with its rival, the Evening Standard, after struggling financially; the combined paper was briefly the New Standard before becoming The Standard, with the Evening News name reappearing briefly in 1987 before being fully absorbed again.
