How Robin became a Cup winner

One of Robin McGibbon's cherished football memories is holding the FA Cup at Tottenham Hotspur's famous White Hart Lane ground, now sadly demolished. And he has the Daily Express – and its then chief football writer Steve Curry, in particular – to thank for the privilege.

It was 1982, and the former Express news sub had sold Alan Frame a piece about Ken Follett, a friend, who had become a millionaire novelist.

When Robin asked Ken what it was like getting to the top of the New York Times bestsellers' list, the ex-London Evening News reporter said: "It must be like winning the FA Cup."

So Robin asked Curry to arrange for Ken to be snapped holding the famous trophy, which Spurs had won that year. The picture was taken by Daily Star photographer Jim Selby, who, as a favour to Robin, took one of him and Follett together.
